Today we went to Odaiba, which is actually a manmade island off Tokyo bay. It is about a 30-minute train way from downtown Tokyo, and it is relatively new. I believe it initially started as a defensive port (against possible attacks from the sea and in response to Commodore Perry), and then was used to store landfill & garbage, and then became this new island full of tourist attractions and entertainment (Don't quote me on this.. haha)
